How to Sharpen Your Hand Plane with Sandpaper & Oilstones

setting up a wood shop

In this article I will explain how to sharpen a hand plane with the aid of sandpaper. This article will also cover oilstones as well as manmade waterstones. Sandpaper is the most efficient and easy way to sharpen a plane. If you don't know how to use sandpaper you can also use a manmade waterstone and a power plan.

Honing a hand plane with sandpaper

To achieve a perfectly flat plane blade, you need to hone it. A hand plane blade can be flattened and polished with sandpaper. This is best done with 1/4-inch thickness glass. You can also buy a cheap cutter for $10. Sandpaper should be of high quality. Low-quality paper can cut too slowly, and it wears too fast. You can also buy a set of grits as a combination pack, which includes several different grits.

Power planes

Before sharpening your hand plane, make sure it is disassembled. Then, remove the blade from the honing guide and place it in the hole. After fitting the blade into your honing guides, ensure the water stone has a flat surface. You can use a diamond honing tool if it is not. The video below will show you how.

Use oilstones

Traditionally, woodworkers have used a three stage sharpening process. First, a power or hand grinder was used to form the basic shape of the tools. Next, a coarse stone was used. The final stage involves a combination between the coarse and fine stone. In some cases, woodworkers have simply used a leather strop. This is not a good option for every day use but it can be used for occasional sharpening.

Man-made waterstones

If you want to sharpen your hand plane to a razor's edge, one of the best methods is to use waterstones. This method gives you a consistent and high-quality cutting edge. The main difference between oilstones or waterstones is how fast they sharpen your tools. Oilstones require more time to sharpen planes while waterstones do the job quickly.

Cleaning the rear contact points on a frog

The surface energy of a substrate is a key factor in determining its adhesion. Wet surfaces may reduce the surface energy which can increase the frogs ability to adhere. You may also be able to increase the contact area, spread out mucus and reduce friction. Cleaning the rear contact points on a frog can improve adhesion.

How To

How to make wood joints

This tutorial will help you join two pieces of wooden together. We will use the "pockethole joint," which means that we drill holes in the wooden pieces and then glue them together. This method works great if your wood is straight and smooth. Dowel joinery might be a better option if your wood is not straight or flat. Here are the steps

  1. Drill Pocket Hole Joints. Start by measuring and marking the spot where the pocket hole joint will be placed. Use a jigsaw or handheld drilling machine to drill 3/8 inch deep holes at the ends of each wood piece.
  2. Sand Smooth. Sanding the wood's edges will ensure that the joint doesn't split.
  3. Glue together. Apply glue to both the ends of the wood. Allow it to sit for approximately 5 minutes before you clamp the pieces together.
  4. Secure the pieces together. After the glue has dried completely, you can clamp the pieces together until they are flush.
  5. Trim Joinery. Trim any excess wood surrounding the joint once the glue has dried completely.

Make sure to leave enough room between the pieces so that you can turn them inside and out.
