Chainsaw Wood Carving

tool tricks

Many artists are starting to explore the art of wood carving with a chainsaw. This art form is an extension of their skills and often uses a mix of traditional and modern carving techniques. Crager, along with Tracie Dugas his wife, have been carving beautiful wood creations together since the 1960s. In between shows, they try to get home as much as possible to help out with painting and staining. His daughters are now involved in his work as well, helping out on occasion with painting or staining. White pine is preferred by them as it is lighter and less susceptible to cracking.

Rich Anderson

Rich Anderson is a chainsaw wood carve artist from Reedsport, Oregon. Anderson is a Poughkeepsie native and lives with his son and wife. Anderson is a graduate in fine arts with several degrees. He also teaches art to pre-K to fifth graders. Anderson has carved many sculptures throughout Long Island. His sculptures range from tall trees to small pieces such as corn ear sculptures. He is currently working on a sign for Youngs Farm in Riverhead.

The $400 chainsaw lets him create intricate sculptures that would have taken days to chisel from a tree. Chainsaw wood carving is also a greener choice than chisels and hammers because they are recyclable. Anderson markets his business via word of mouth. Anderson carved a massive cobra for Wading Rive and a great-blue heron as a mechanic.

Tracie Dugas

Tracie dugas's life-size wood carving of a wizard is an excellent example of her ability as a woodcarver using a chainsaw. The 49-year old woman lives in Clare, Nova Scotia between Digby & Yarmouth. The chainsaw wood carver was just one of many artists who displayed their work at the Canada Day weekend in Sydney. Although tourists flooded Sydney's waterfront, the dry spell allowed locals to take in the view of the chainsaw artist and enjoy the waterway.

Tim Crager

While Tim Crager didn't consider himself an artist and was only moderately talented with a chainsaw, his passion for carving turned into a full-time career six years ago. Crager has sold more than $1,000,000 worth of carvings across the Eastern U.S. since then. Crager was raised in Garrett, Eastern Kentucky. His father was a chainsaw wood carver. The artist's style fascinated him so he called his boss one day and gave his two week notice.

When it comes to material choice, Crager prefers white pine because it's easily available from tree trimming companies. Some people prefer other woods. Crager is a follower of the grain and allows the saw to guide his creations. Crager may know exactly what he's making before he starts any project. However, he often changes his mind mid-project. For small projects, it takes less than an hour. Large carvings can take 33 to 35hrs.

Don Scoggins

Don Scoggins can be described as a chainsaw woodcarver. His wood carvings often include many animals and are very detailed. His creations are a hit with tourists and locals alike. Blue Arrow Farm has a chainsaw shop, and its sculptures are so detailed and large they grace the front of the farm. Blue Arrow Farm is run by Don Oriolo. He is also the owner and manager of Felix the Cat. Kacie Oriolo, Don Oriolo’s husband, met while participating in a New Jersey State Fair competition for chainsaws.

The 15-year old wood carver was awarded the award at a Reedsport, Oregon competition. He was already proficient at hand carving, but he hadn't ever used a machine like a chainsaw. His carvings now feature an otter, mother bear and squirrel looking out of a tree. Now he is preparing for the National Chainsaw Carving Competition.

FAQ

Which woods are good to use for furniture-making?

Woods are classified according their hardness. Softwoods include cedar, pine, cedar, and Cypress. Because they are resistant, they can be used for outdoor furniture. The hardwoods include teak, maple, mahogany and oak. Because they can't weather outside, they're usually used indoors.

Where do I start with woodworking?

Learning how to build furniture is the best method. You will need tools. There are bound to be mistakes. But if your persistence is consistent, you will soon master the craft.

Start by choosing a project you'd like to complete. It could be something as simple as a box or as elaborate as a full-scale entertainment center. After you have decided on a project to work on, contact a local woodworker that specializes in this type of work. Ask them for their advice about the tools and where they can be found. It's possible to ask your friend if they do this type of work.

How can my shop be organized?

A designated place to store your tools is the first step towards keeping your workshop clean. To keep your tools sharp and ready for work, keep them clean of dust and debris. To hang accessories and tools, use pegboard hooks.

Which material would you recommend for woodworking lessons?

You can start with softwoods like pine or poplar. You will feel more comfortable with these softwoods, so you can move onto hardwood.

Is there a way to start my own woodworking company?

It is difficult to start your own woodworking company. There are many requirements and regulations that must be followed. You don't have to go through all that hassle of setting it up. Many people join already-established businesses. You will only have to pay membership fees, taxes, and other charges.

What is the difference of plywood and particleboard?

Plywood can be described as a mixture of layers and wood that have been pressed together with pressure. Plywood can come in many thicknesses and is used for flooring and cabinets. Particle board can be made from sawdust, resin, and then compressed to make large blocks. It's often used for home renovation projects. Both boards can be cut easily and are both durable.

How much do hobbyists need to invest in starting a business?

It is likely that you will need some capital in order to buy the required tools and supplies if your goal is to open your own woodworking business. You can start by purchasing a small table saw and drill press as well as a circular saw, circular saw, jigsaw and sanding machines. These items aren't very expensive, so you won't break the bank.

How To

How to drive a nails in wood

When driving a nail into wood, it is important to first choose the correct size and kind of hammer. The most popular types of hammers include claw hammers as well as mallets and ball peenhammers. Each type of hammer has its pros and cons. For example, a claw hammer works best when you want to hit something hard, like nails; however, it's difficult to control precisely where the blow lands. The sledgehammer works well for large areas, but is too heavy for smaller tasks.

After selecting the right hammer, you will need to place your hand flat against one side of the head. The handle should rest comfortably in your hands. Grip the handle firmly, but don't squeeze it so tightly that you hurt yourself. Your wrist should be relaxed while you hold the hammer straight upwards. Swing the hammer back towards the ground, with your aim at the middle of the nail. You should feel the impact of the hammer striking the nail. Practice swinging your hammer on a block of wooden until you feel comfortable.

You can now drive the nail by holding the hammer to your body. To ensure that the nail is perpendicular on the surface of the wooden floor, position it. Keep your eyes focused directly on the tip of the nail. Swing the hammer forward, and then move the hammerhead. This can be repeated several times to increase the speed of your swing. Try adding power to your swings when you've mastered the technique. To make it more powerful, hold the hammer up high to your shoulder and then bring it down. This way, you'll be able to put more energy behind your blows.

After you have nailed the hole, take the hammer off the nail. To remove the remainder of the nails, you can use a screwdriver/pry bar. Keep the nail heads parallel to the board's surfaces in order to avoid splitting wood.
