Chainsaw Wood Carving

joining miter joints

Many artists are exploring the art of chainsaw wood carving. It is a natural extension to their skills set and often includes a mixture of traditional carving techniques with modern designs. Crager, along with Tracie Dugas his wife, have been carving beautiful wood creations together since the 1960s. Between shows, they like to go home and help with staining. His daughters now help him with staining and painting, as well. They prefer to use white pine which is lighter and less likely than black pine to crack.

Rich Anderson

Rich Anderson, a chainsaw wood carver from Reedsport in Oregon, is Rich Anderson. Anderson is a Poughkeepsie native and lives with his son and wife. Anderson has several degrees from the Fine Arts Department and teaches art to children from Pre-K through Fifth Grade. He has carved many sculptures around Long Island and has even created sculptures in Colorado. His pieces include standing trees as well as smaller pieces such corn ear sculptures. He is currently completing a sign design for Youngs Farm Riverhead.

A $400 chainsaw allows him to create beautiful sculptures that would take days to chisel out of a tree. Chainsaw wood carving makes it a better choice than hammers, chisels, and hammers. They can also be recycled. Anderson advertises his business through word of mouth and has carved a giant cobra and a great blue heron for a mechanic in Wading River.

Tracie Dugas

Tracie dugas's life-size wood carving of a wizard is an excellent example of her ability as a woodcarver using a chainsaw. The 49-year-old woman lives in Clare (Nova Scotia), between Digby and Yarmouth. The chainsaw wood carver was one of several artists who exhibited their work during the Canada Day weekend in Sydney, Nova Scotia. The Sydney waterfront was flooded with tourists, but the brief dry spell provided a perfect opportunity for locals to enjoy the waterfront and catch a glimpse of the chainsaw artist.

Tim Crager

Tim Crager was not an artist. He was only moderately skilled with a chainsaw. However, six years ago his passion for carving made him a full-time carver. Crager sold more than $1million worth of carvings over the Eastern U.S. in his six-year career. Crager was born in Garrett in Eastern Kentucky and grew up following a chainsaw woodcarver at work. Crager was attracted to the art's unique style and he gave his boss his two-week notice.

Crager prefers white Pine because it's easy to find from tree trimming firms. Many people prefer different types of wood. Crager works with the grain of wood as a guide and let the saw do the rest. Crager may know exactly what he's making before he starts any project. However, he often changes his mind mid-project. While small projects can be completed in a matter of minutes, large carvings can take up to 33 to 35 hours.

Don Scoggins

Don Scoggins is a chainsaw wooden carver. His wood carvings feature intricate details and many animals. His creations are a hit with tourists and locals alike. Blue Arrow Farm's entrance and coffee shop are adorned with chainsaw sculptures that are so detailed and large. Blue Arrow Farm is owned and managed by Don Oriolo. Kacie Oriolo, Don Oriolo's wife, met during a New Jersey State Fair chainsaw competition.

The award-winning wood carver began carving in a contest in Reedsport, Oregon 15 years ago. He had already carved by hand, but he had never used a chainsaw before. His carvings include an otter and a mother bear, as well as a squirrel peeking through a tree. He's now getting ready for the National Chainsaw Carving Competition.

How To

How do you measure wood accurately?

Wood measurement can be done using several methods. We use a digital ruler (a tool to measure distances), laser level (used for leveling your work surface), and bubble level (used for levelling your work surface).

A digital caliper has two jaws that open and close. One jaw holds the measured object while the other measures the distance between the two points. The digital calculator is ideal for measuring very small distances, like the thicknesses or wood.

Laser levels have an infrared light beam that projects a line across the floor. The laser emits red dots on the line. The line can be viewed down to determine if the surface has an even surface. Laser levels are best for checking the accuracy of large surfaces.

Bubble levels look similar to a compass. There is a bubble at the center of this device. The device will indicate whether the surface is level as long as it is centered. For checking the accuracy of small areas, bubble levels are useful.
