Whittling Pencils - An Introduction

woodworking tips and techniques

The best way to personalize wood carvings is with Whittling pencils. This introductory guide shows how to make Uncle Sam, Santas, Leprechauns and Santas using a variety different tools. These pencils have clear instructions with step by step photos. The author also gives tips on choosing the correct micro-mini carvers. He also offers tips on choosing over-sized pencils as well as basic details about painting and facial hair.

Dale Vander Linden

Dale Vander Linden (81) still makes pencils, despite his advanced age. He has been crafting pencils for over 60 years. In fact, he was a US Navy veteran in the Korean War. Vander Linden is survived in death by his wife, Cherry Vander Linden (61 years), sons Stephen & JoAnne, as well as brother Pete. His parents Guy Vander Linden and Katie Vander Linden were also his predeceased, as well as his brothers Ern (Don) and Keith.

Dale Vander Linden uses pencils and rolling pins when carving his Santa Claus. He spends his days sculpting Santa Claus Claus from pencils and other materials, at 81. While many would be tempted to use a carver's toolkit to carve the Santa, he prefers using a rolling pin.

Wood carving techniques

There are many different wood carving techniques you can use when creating your unique pencils. Natural oils are one of the most common ways to finish wood carvings. These oils protect the wood from moisture and dirt, and they impart a sheen to the wood that helps the observer to read the form. Avoid gloss varnish. It creates a shiny and illegible surface that could confuse the viewer. Another option is wax. It gives pencils a soft, lustrous shine. This technique is most suitable for indoor carvings.

Consider the type and purpose of your carving. A wood with little figure and fine grain is best for detailed carving. It is possible to miss fine details if the wood has a strong figure. The next step after choosing the wood is to select the right tools. You'll need safety goggles and Kevlar work gloves. These will protect you from any wood chips and make sure that your hands don't scratch the wood.

Sanding the edges and ends of whittling crayons

wood work basics

Wood carving is an extremely popular form of decoration. This method typically involves carving a wooden plaque or tablet. Sanding the edges of these pencils can improve the look and feel of the finished product. These pencils are useful regardless of what purpose you have in carving wood. You must first sand these pencil edges to achieve a smooth, sharp surface.

Start by making divots into the graphite base. You can now use a number-2 pencil to make the marks once you've completed that. Continue the process until your pencil is perfect. After the carving process, you can apply hot-melt glue to the pencil tip and re-carve it.

FAQ

Do I have to refinish my furniture?

Yes! There are many different ways to refinish older furniture without the need for professional help. Here are a few suggestions:

Use sandpaper for removing stains and scratches. Then wipe down the surface with a clean cloth.

Clear polyurethane varnish should be applied. Let dry completely before moving furniture around.

Use acrylic paint to paint furniture.

You can stain the furniture instead of using paint. The stain will give the furniture a rich look.

Shellac wax can be applied. The wax will add shine to the wood and protect it.

Where do I get my woodworking supplies?

There are many places that you can find all the information you need. You could go to your local hardware shop or visit websites such as Amazon.com.

You can also look for used furniture at flea markets or garage sales.

How long does it usually take to complete a piece furniture?

It depends on the type of wood you choose, the complexity of the design, and the amount of finishing you apply. Hardwoods, for example, require more maintenance than softwoods. Hardwoods can also be more costly than softwoods. But they last longer and resist moisture better. Finishing furniture can take anywhere from one week up to three months.

Do you have any other information I should know about woodworking and/or the process of making it?

It is easy to underestimate the amount work involved with furniture construction. The hardest part of the process is actually finding the right wood. It is difficult to choose between the various types of wood.

Another problem is that not all wood has uniform properties. Some woods will warp and others will split or crack. These things should be considered before you buy wood.

How do you know which type of wood you are working with?

Always inspect the label when buying wood. It should have information about the wood species as well its moisture content and whether any preservatives were used.

Statistics

  • Woodworkers on the lower end of that spectrum, the bottom 10% to be exact, make roughly $24,000 a year, while the top 10% makes $108,000. (zippia.com)
  • If your lumber isn't as dry as you would like when you purchase it (over 22% in Glen Huey's opinion…probably over 10-15% in my opinion), then it's a good idea to let it acclimate to your workshop for a couple of weeks. (woodandshop.com)
  • Overall employment of woodworkers is projected to grow 8 percent from 2020 to 2030, about as fast as the average for all occupations. (bls.gov)
  • The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates that the number of jobs for woodworkers will decline by 4% between 2019 and 2029. (indeed.com)

How To

How to make wood joints

This tutorial will show how to join 2 pieces of wood together. The "pocket hole joint" is a method whereby we drill holes into the wood and glue them together. This method is great if your wood's straight and smooth. If your wood isn't straight or flat, you might want to try another method, such as dowel joinery. Here are the steps

  1. Drill Pocket Hole Joints. Start by measuring and marking the spot where the pocket hole joint will be placed. Next, drill 3/4 inch holes in each end of each piece using a handheld drilling machine or jigsaw.
  2. Sand Smooth. The wood's edges can be sanded to prevent splitting.
  3. Glue Together Apply glue to the sides of both wood. Allow it to sit for approximately 5 minutes before you clamp the pieces together.
  4. Clamp the Pieces Together. Once the glue has dried, clamp the pieces together so they are flush.
  5. Trim Joinery. Trim the excess wood around the joint after the glue has dried completely.

To be able to turn the pieces inside-out, leave enough room between them.
